Building an Optical Tweezers

The following pages give a practical introduction to building an optical tweezers - specifically, one suited to doing single molecule measurements on proteins such as molecular motors. The aim of this section is to give a practical guide, based on our own experiences, rather than a thorough review. It is this practical information which is often hardest to come by!

We begin by giving a schematic diagram of a tweezers apparatus. This acts both as an overview of the instrument and a visual index to the different components involved (click on a part for more information). All the components are discussed; those for position sensing and beam steering have their own detailed sections.
